PROTECTING YOUR ULTRALIGHT AIRCRAFT PROPELLER
Propeller protection for ultralights and ultralight aircraft.
Wooden propellers are some of the most resilient
and economical propellers that we can buy for out
ultralight aircraft.
Propeller manufacturers like Culver Props and
Tennessee Props have been building props for
ultralight aircraft for decades.
But like anything else in life Mother Nature, age,
neglect and abuse can play havoc with them.
If your aircraft is equipped with a wooden propeller
when you park it leave the prop in a horizontal
position. This way the water in the prop will not run
down to one end causing an in balance.
At the first sign of peeling varnish sand, revarnish
and rebalance the propeller. This will prevent rot from
starting in the prop.
Inspect your propeller carefully for cracks or damage
before every flight. Any knicks should be repaired
and the prop re-coated and balanced as soon as
possible.
Check your prop bolts for shearing, improper torque,
or looseness. ESPECIALLY if your prop has a
wooden hub.
A wooden hub, or wooden prop expands and contract
with moisture, heat, and cold, which of course effects
the torque on your prop bolts.
Once the prop has been installed and torqued
properly safety wire the bolts.
On floats make sure you have leading edge
protection on the your prop, water hitting a prop is just like throwing stones through it.
Ultralight Aircraft Propeller Tips:
Be prepared to switch the engine off quickly if severe vibration occurs after a prop strike or failure. We have
seen engines torn off their aircraft in flight after a prop failure!
Repairing a prop is something you should do ONLY if your know what your doing!
Any repair or modification can effect the strength, durability, and reliability of your propeller.
Consult the prop manufacturer whenever you need to repair a prop!
