Solo engine ignition coil installation

INSTALLATION;

b) Connecting the ignition cable: The ignition cable is screwed into the threaded connection of the plastic-coated ignition armature. The distance of the capped connection from grounding parts of the engine must be 5/64 in. (2 mm) minimum to prevent the possibility of spark over. It is only required to see that the armature plate can be sufficiently turned in both directions for ignition adjustment.

II IGNITION ADJUSTMENT:

In order to adjust the ignition proceed as follows:

a) Remove the complete starter housing.

b) Remove adjustment nut and safety washer.

c) Remove starter cup.

d) Follow ignition adjustment instructions below

The spark plug must fire with the piston at a specified position and ignite the fuel/air mixture. This piston position is specified in the engine specification section of this manual. The magneto is so installed on the engine that at the instant the contact breaker points are opened by the breaker cam, i.e., at the instant of firing, the specified break-away gap exists. BREAK-AWAY GAP IS THE DISTANCE BETWEEN THE TRAILING EDGE OF THE FLY -WHEEL POLE SHOE AND THE ~NEAREST POLE SHOE EDGE OF THE IGNITION ARMATURE AT THE INSTANT THE POINTS OPEN.

When the breaker points open the following conditions must be fulfilled:

1 - Piston must be at specified BTBC position.

2 - Break-Away gap must be correct.

Adjust breaker points by turning armature plate to specified point gap (see engine specification section).

II SERVICING:

a) Contact breaker: Under normal conditions, the points opening should be checked approximately every 100 operating hours. Proceed exactly as described above (adjusting the points opening). After each new adjustment of the points opening, the ignition timing adjustment must also be checked and possibly readjusted.

In the course of operation, burned spots and minute tips and pits (so-called contact migration) form on the contact breaker points. These appearances generally do not interfere with the operation. But should ignition troubles occur due to heavily burned points, they must be replaced by a new set of points. Clean dirty points carefully with gasoline so that no grease and oil residues remain on them which would otherwise result in premature failure. For this reason, the points should not be touched with dirty fingers. When carrying out a general engine overhaul, the contact breaker points should be replaced in a specialized workshop. The grease supply for contact breaker cam lubrication will then be refilled at the same time.

b) Slider: The contact breaker lever slider wears out unnoticeably under normal operating conditions. However, if dirt, dust or fine sand gets into the contact breaker area, they form together with the cam lubricant a kind of abrasive mass which wears out the slider prematurely. Therefore, care must be taken that no dirt gets onto the cam. Wearing out of the slider also changes the breaker points which must then be readjusted.

c) Lubricating: The magneto does not retiree lubrication during operation. When the engine undergoes a general overhaul, a check of the magneto in a specialized workshop is recommended.
