Single place Part 103 ultralights in the United States are defined as single
place ultralight aircraft that weigh 254 lbs or less, have a stall speed
not more than 24 knots, a top
speed of 55 knots, and carry no more than 5 gallons of fuel. To fly a
legal Part 103
ultralight aircraft in the United States the pilot does not require a
pilot license.
Single place aircraft weighing more than 254 lbs. in the U.S. require a
pilots license and must be built as experimental, amateur built,
homebuilt aircraft. These include weight shift aircraft, more commonly
known as trikes, powered parachutes, and powered para-gliders.
Single place ultralights in Canada can weigh up to 1200 lbs. and an
ultralight pilots license is required to fly them. |

The Tiger Cub UL was designed to meet all the conditions of
the U.S. Far Part 103 with a F-33 Hirth
engine. The Tiger Cub UL has, a folding wing and tail, fully
enclosed cockpit (large enough to accommodate a 6'6"-250 lb. pilot in
comfort), full three axis controls with flaperons and a steerable tail
wheel, classic looks, a wide speed range and rugged landing gear (standard
design features).
With a F-33 Hirth engine a 170 pound pilot needs about
300 ft. of short grass runway to get airborne, this same pilot can expect
a 600 ft per. min. climb on a standard day and an 8:1 glide ratio.
With
full length flaperons you can float out or dive hard w/ out picking up
excessive speed. A Tiger Cub UL slips very well too, even w/ full
flaps, so you can get into a tight field with ease.

For those individuals who want more power the 503 Rotax
can be installed, but will put the Tiger Cub over the ultralight weight
limit in the U.S. The 503 Rotax is the
largest recommended engine for the Tiger Cub UL.
Plans: Plans
include ¼ scale prints of the wings, tail surfaces, fuselage and bulkhead
(panels). Full size prints of all the gussets and chromoly parts. A
complete material list, a vender list and a list of available parts
packages. The plans also include an assembly manual (over 200 pages of
pictures and text), that gives step by step directions and tips to guide
you through assembly, rigging, covering, wiring, plumbing and
finishing. Estimated 650 hrs build time.
The airframe is aluminum tube
and gusset construction and requires only standard shop tools to build.
There are a few chromoly parts I.E. landing gear spindles, wing &
tail universals, joystick socket, etc. Full size prints and 3D drawings of
each part are included in the plans (if you don't weld you can order a
chromoly package from Johnston Aviation or take the prints to a
local fabricating shop). We also offer a bent tube package (for builders
that don't have access to bending equipment).
