Single place Part 103 ultralights in the United States are defined as single
place ultralight aircraft that weigh 254 lbs or less, have a stall speed
not more than 24 knots, a top
speed of 55 knots, and carry no more than 5 gallons of fuel. To fly a
legal Part 103
ultralight aircraft in the United States the pilot does not require a
pilot license.
Single place aircraft weighing more than 254 lbs. in the U.S. require a
pilots license and must be built as experimental, amateur built,
homebuilt aircraft. These include weight shift aircraft, more commonly
known as trikes, powered parachutes, and powered para-gliders.
Single place ultralights in Canada can weigh up to 1200 lbs. and an
ultralight pilots license is required to fly them. |

Flightstar Formula/Spyder
The single-place Flightstar benefits from a long legacy and one
of the most intensive engineering programs in the business.
Originally produced by a well-known aerospace firm, the latest
version of the Flightstar has matured nicely under the direction of
a fellow who has passionately kept this design alive and brought it
into the 1990s. The 300-lb bird can be powered by 447 or 503 Rotax
engines, has light-but-authoritative three-axis controls, and a
rugged trike landing gear that has withstood the
"Zoom-O-Crunch" on more than one occasion. The 30' wing is
constant chord, and employs the ultralight-style norm of aluminum
tubing and Dacron sailcloth covering. Stout and agile, the
Flightstar has an excellent history thus far. Best of all, little or
no special building skills are required.
The Flightstar will take off at 160', climb at 1100 fpm, and
cruise at some 75 mph. With only 60 hours needed to build this bird,
the craft can be in the air and offering plenty of fun in no time.
The 10-gal fuel tank offers a 180-mile range, and has a payload of
some 480 lbs.

ZOOM REPORT: The people who run Flightstar are old and
trusted friends of mine. I know them to be ethical, proper
business-people, so we have very good vibes for their future. The
aircraft is a sweetheart and has capabilities that go beyond even
what the manufacturer will admit. Extremely docile, the bird
performs well on minimal horsepower and the two-seat version makes
for an excellent introduction to the single-place aircraft. This
aircraft was our choice for 1994's "Best New Ultralight"
and reports over the last two years have confirmed that distinction
was well deserved. FMI: Flightstar Inc, POB 760, Ellington, CT 06029
