American Sportscopter International Inc was at
Airventure with their Ultrasport 254/331/496 model helicopters.
On display in prototype stage, for the helicopter, was a new engine the
Pal 95 Aeromotor from New Zealand. The
engine is a twin cylinder, air cooled, fuel injected, four stroke engine
featuring a computer controlled electronic ignition, with electric start.
The engine puts out 65 h.p. at 5200 rpm. and comes in at an all out weight
of 136 lbs. The engine when supplied
from New Zealand is available with a belt reduction drive, but on the
Sportcopter's it will be running direct drive into "Sportcopter"
gear box to run the rotor blades etc. According
to factory representatives the "power curve" is one of the main
reasons they are doing the R & D work with the engine. It apparently
follows very closely the power need of the "helicopter." Another
benefit is the reported 1500 hour TBO of the engine. For
