Coming in at 7 on our list of ultralight aircraft that give you the biggest bang for your buck is the RaceAir Designs
Skylite.
The Skylite design was introduced in 1988 by Ed Fisher, who wanted a rag
& tube ultra light aircraft with the classic parasol wing configuration. He
also wanted an inexpensive to build, open cockpit tail-dragger that would
appeal to the average handyman.
The Skylite prototype was built, tested and debuted to the public at
Oshkosh 1991, where it received the Grand Champion Award for
Ultralights.
The Skylite is a true part 103 ultralight. It is a cute little taildragger with
a tractor mounted engine. Controls are standard three axis control, via a center
mounted stick, rudder pedals and a left throttle.
The original prototype was powered by a Rotax 277 single cylinder 28 HP two stroke engine. The latest units are
flying on the Hirth F33 single cylinder 28 HP engine with a belt reduction drive.
The Skylite uses a welded 4130 steel tube fuselage. The wings use
aluminum spars utilizing tube and ladder construction withEd
Fisher's wing rib attach cup and rib angle construction for strength
and lightweight. The Skylite is covered in standard aircraft covering
materials.
Construction time runs from 500 to 700 hours, with now special
tools or equipment required.
Currently over 100 Skylites have been built and flown, and Raceair
Designs continues to sell plans and components, and supports
builders. The original prototype Skylite now has over 600 hours on
it.
Ed Fisher owns Raceair Designs and is the designer and sells plans for the Skylite, Micro Mong, Lil Bitts and many
others.
