Airdoo amphibious two place aircraft
|
The Airdoo:
Several months ago while surfing the web I came upon a site that
took about 15 minutes to load. But when it did load there was a beautiful picture of a
concept aircraft called the Airdoo.
At Sun N Fun I came upon the "concept" in real life mode. According to the
factory the place has been called many things, including "a guppy." It has been
designed from the ground up to be an amphibian, in both single and two place models.
The craft uses a blend of both aluminum and composite construction. With the outer body
being composite and the inner aluminum tube skeleton.
The wing uses an I beam spar for a leading and trailing edge, similar to that used in a
Piper Pacer. Honey comb S glass composite ribs, are used for light weight, and strength,
and covering is standard aircraft cloth.
The engine mount has to be seen to be believed. It is made from 1/4 inch C & C -
6061 T6 aircraft grade aluminum, and comes up both side of the fuselage. These then attach
to the central aluminum fuselage structure, with the hull the attached to the frame via
aluminum plates that have been imbedded into the hull during construction.
This makes for easy "customer" building since once he/she has the frame built
the is literally lowered into the hull. The factory
reports building times should be in the 120 hour range.
Power for the prototype is a 2si - 540 - L70, this is a water cooled two stroke 70
hp engine. With this power plant the plane should get off the water in 250 feet.
Cruise at 75 knots with a stall speed of 35 knots. Flaps are available as is a second wing
set. All three wheels retract mechanically at the same time.
The plane can be equipped with a full canopy, or sliding doors.
While the proto-type is was not ready to fly at
the show the factory indicates that the two place version should be ready about mid May.
