Ultralight aircraft safety advisory
|
Aircraft
All ultralight aircraft using pins and rings or safety style clips on any of their control
systems.
Incident report:
It has been reported by several ultralight owners that during routine preflight
inspection, plus in one case an in air experience, that the safety pins and or rings hold
the pin in has
1. been damaged in taxiing, enabling the pin to fall out.
2. has rusted to the point where the spring tension is no longer in effect.
3. during assembly and disassembly the retaining ring has not been replaced.
In one case a second pilot after being asked to fly a customers plane actually discovered
while flying the aircraft that the wing nuts securing the flying wire bolts had vibrated
off in flight and the bolts were only held in by the tension of the wires.
Suggestions:
It is highly recommended that any pin using a safety ring or clip be immediately replaced
with an an bolt and a self locking nut or castigated nut and cotter pin. |
