K & N airfilter used on the Rotax 447, Rotax 503, Rotax 582 ultralight
aircraft engines safety bulletin.
|
In going over the mail from this summer I have come across 7 incidents on
powered parachutes where the carburetors have come off the craft.
There are several things that can contribute to this.
- First the clamp can be to tight. Do Not over tighten as it causes the carb to actually be
forced out of the rubber intake. The correct torque is 43 INCH lbs.
- Secondly the carb socket can become soft over time and allow the carb to
fall out - it is suggested the sockets be replaced at least twice a year.
- Third DO NOT use two
separate airfilters,
especially if they are long, and
or heavy. The recommendation is to use a K & N DUAL air filter
designed specifically for aircraft use. It has a lower
profile and joins the two carbs together, thus taking the weight evenly
over the two carbs.
- Fourth- If you can support the back of the air filter by connecting it back
to the engine with a bracket. Do not support it to the airframe as the
engine moves with the filter attached! Mounting it to something other than
the engine will just increase the likely hood of loosing the air filter.
- To extend the life of the sockets remove them, clean them with acetone,
reinstall them, retighten the clamps and apply "dielectric grease" to
ONLY
exposed rubber - Do not use a spray it will get under the clamps. The
"dielectric grease" will help lubricate the socket and prevent UV
deterioration.

Rotax 447 single carburetor aircraft engine.
Note the tab for safety wire and that the
filter has NO chrome cover. |

Rotax 503 dual carburator aircraft engine.
Note the tabs for
safety wire, the shorter profile, the filter helps support the
carburetors and that the filter has NO chrome cover, which has been
reported to separate from the filter. |
