It is very interesting to see just how
market research plays a role in the bring about of changes in a design.
Take the Quicksilver wire braced series of aircraft for instance - every
since Quicksilver announced the introduction of the GT line of aircraft,
pilots flying the venerable wire braced MX series have called for a
strut braced version.
This has lead to at least one other
manufacturer with roots in the MX series to break away and start
producing what the market asked for.
Well my mother's home made soup is the
best in the world, and no matter how my wife or daughter make it -
it just doesn't taste the same! This year the "mother" of the
MX line Quicksilver introduced according to John Lasko "a totally
redesigned" strut braced two place version of the MX series - the
MX Sport 11 S.
According to John the craft has been
redesigned from the ground up. The wing is similar to that used on the
GT 500. The pilot cage is wider for pilot comfort. The Sport II S has wider tail booms to accommodate
72 inch props, and redesigned nose and tension struts for added
strength.
But things that have not changed are the
easy bolt together construction, vacuum sealed packaging, and one of the
most comprehensive assembly manuals in the industry. The Sport 11S also
uses the same control systems as the wire braced series, with dual
rudder pedals, a center mounted stick and dual throttle controls.
With new owners Carl vonhirsch and
Manuel Perez taking over the factory just over a year ago, production
has increased on parts and aircraft to the point where most parts can be
shipped the next day, and some model kits are in stock for delivery in
as little as a week.
