Orbitair
|
If you were a visitor to Oshkosh back in 1988
you couldn't help noticing a very "unique" concept flying vehicle
called the Orbitair. The design by David Myers featured a "circular
wing design"
which David applied for a patent on and received
in 1991.
Over the last 10 years the "Orbitair" has undergone
some very extensive design changes. To date a total of six
different designs have featured the "circular wing" -
but even the wing has changed - this can be seen in the picture
above which features the first concept to the pictures below which
show
the latest model both static and flying.
Due to limited success with his earlier models, which utilized the
bottom of the wing forward and the top of the wing aft it was
decided that a change had to be made! In 1997 David reversed the
wing, bringing the top forward and the bottom aft. Which resulted
in the first "official" short hops off the runway in the
summer of 1998.
In the fall of 98 more power was added and the first successful
flight was achieved. David admits there is still a long way to go
before the design can be successfully marketed, and admitted that
the craft has not as yet been flown a
complete circuit. In fact his slightly bruised body was evidence
to a very hard landing just several weeks prior to the show which
required the "reconstruction" of most of the plane on
display.
