For those looking for a set of plans to
build a hangar to protect an ultralight - the people at LAPS look to
have just what you need. The "UV Shelter" is estimated to cost
in the $2,000 U.S. to produce.
According to Jeff Getzelman of LAPS the
current size shelter is 32 feet in depth and 40 feet long. With all of
the materials available from your nearest lumber yard. Tools required -
basic hand tools and a power miter saw. The 3 piece header has a
manufactured crown in it, which provides the strength necessary to span
32 feet. The arches are cut to a specific angle, with inner and outer
gussets. For winds it is suggested that the corners be anchored in
concrete in the corners.
The biggest time consuming part is
jigging for the arches, and the the 100 gussets. Jeff estimated it would
take a couple of days to make the prefab parts, a day to assemble them
and about 4 hours to cover it in steel. Currently there are over a dozen
hangars built and being used, with many others currently being built
from plans.
It features a wooden I beam frame with a 28 gauge steel roof. This I
beam construction
and the use of corrugated steel provide the building with its strength.
You can finish it off with sides and a door for security. The plans also
include instruction on how to build several different size shelters.
The Plans kit was priced at $95 at the
show and includes a full set of plans with manuals and a material list.
The plans are easy to read, with
step by step instructions on how to cut all components and assemblies.
Also include are ideas and suggestions on how to secure the shelter to
the ground, and how to brace for snow loads.
