Alternate aircraft engines for ultralights and light
sport aircraft.

The search for
economical, affordable, reliable aircraft engines for ultralight
and experimental aircraft continues. This year mounted on a single
place experimental I found a Walter Mikron, 4 stroke, four
cylinder in line, air cooled, 2440 cc engine from the Czech
Republic.

At Sun N Fun I had a
very entertaining interview with the manufacturers of the Wankel
Rotary engine. The Wankel was just been introduced and by the
"story told" it was the "better mousetrap."
Well some months have gone by since then and some manufacturers
have had an opportunity to see whether the "better
mousetrap" was all it was cracked up to be.

Aircraft Sales and
parts manufactures of the Chinook, Beaver, and Summit power
parachutes was also "down on the farm." At Sun N Fun
they introduced the MZ series of ultralight aircraft engines. At
Oshkosh they added two new engines to the line. The engines in the
MZ series have been air and fan cooled - but the two new engines
are liquid cooled. One is a two cylinder engine the other a three
cylinder, both two strokes.

Motavia problems
continue:
The package as shown is
neat and compact, and looks to be well engineered. But
the engine was delayed for various reasons, and they lost one of
their major supporters their U.S. distributor. At Sun N Fun one
engine was flying on one trike! With engines according to the
factory " being delivered to ultralight manufacturers for
installation on aircraft."
