There are several kit manufactures building
replica fighters in both the ultralight and experimental category. One
thing that is common in all of the kits that is the
quality of the finished product.
This has to say a lot for the kit
manufacturer when each of the craft his customers come to shows such as
Sun N Fun and Oshkosh with are so beautifully finished.
Robert
Baslee of Aerodrome Aeroplanes had several of his designs on display -
down in the "replica section," including a complete fuselage
and wings from his 3/4 scale Fokker DR 1 triplane.
When you look at the building times for
each kit it is very easy to see why the craft can go together in as
little as 400 hours total time - just over an hour a day for a year - or
winters project working 4 or 5 hours a night.
The DR-1 is available in a complete kit
or in 12 sub kits:
Kit #1 Rudder:Includes Materials to construct rudder spar, rudder bow,
ribs, gussets, control horn, wooden dowel rods, hinges,
rivets, AN hardware, and plans. The rudder kit is introduced as the first assembly designed
to introduce a new builder to the method of construction as
well as familiarize him with the plans. Approximate
construction time: 6 hrs
Kit #2 Fuselage:Consists of materials to construct fuselage ladder truss,
gussets, inner sleeves, machine parts, rivets, AN hardware,
hinges & plans. Fuselage must be constructed prior to
proceeding with the other kits. Approximate construction
time: 48 hrs
Kit #3 Horizontal Stabilizer & Elevator: Consists of
Materials to construct spars, Elevator bow, horizontal
frame, ribs, gussets, rivets, wooden dowel rods, hinges,
inner sleeves, AN hardware and plans. Approximate
construction time 9 hrs.
Kit #4 Landing Gear: Consists of materials required to
construct gear legs, gussets, axle, main wheels, bearings,
machine parts, bracing cables, nico press swedges, tangs, AN
hardware, tail wheel, bunge cords and plans. Approximate
construction time: 14 hrs.
Kit #5 Wing:consists of materials to construct spars, comp. struts,
inner sleeves, machined parts, ribs, tip bow, hinges, drag
anU drag cables, nico press swedges, thimbles, tangs,
gussets, rivets AN hardware, wooden dowel rods & plans.
Approximate construction time: 80 hrs.
Kit #6 Cabanes & Lift struts Consists of materials to
construct lift struts, cabanes, all machined lift forks,
ovalized tubing, gussets, AN hardware, saddles, cable, nico
press swedges, thimbles, tangs, plans. Approximate
construction time: 26 hrs.
Kit #7 Control Systems:Consists of materials to construct torque tube ~mbly, elevator push
pull tube, rudder als, cables, nico press swedges, thimbles, ~s,
machined parts, uniflex cables, AN Iware, sheet metal, ball bearing
rod ends, & plans Approximate construction 18 hrs.
Kit #8 Firewall & formers isists of materials to construct
firewall, et metal for seat, tubing for form ers, )den dowel rods,
rivets, front deck, rument panel, turtle deck former. ) approximate
construction time: 16 hrs.
Kit#9 Covering Supplies:Consists of materials required to cover raft, ceconite poly tak, poly
brush, poly ~y, reinforcing tape, rivets, finishing tapes. )roxi mate
time 100 hrs.
Kit#10 Fuel Tank: tank comes welded with supplies to
all sight gauge.
#11 Engine Mount:Engine mount comes welded after airframe been completed, covered and
painted. Ider must supply accurate weight of rame for engine mount
construction.
#12 Cowling:consists of spun aluminum nose bowl & ~et metal for wrap
around.
The Airdrome Aeroplanes 3/4 scale Fokker
DR-1 can be constructed using
normal hand tools - consisting of hacksaw, hand drill, file, privet gun,
wrenches, & hand nico press )l. Area required for construction
should be proximately the size of a single car garage.
