Mark Beierle
was on hand with his Thunder Gull 2000
sporting a new engine installation. The Gull 2000 is Earth Stars legal
single place ultralight kit plane. It features a 4130 chromoly steel fuselage,
mated to an aluminum wing and tail section. `
At Sun N Fun Mark was using MZ 34, 27 hp single cylinder
engine, which he said "gave good fuel economy, had a wide power band, with good
performance - BUT had a lot of vibration." Since Sun N Fun he has installed a
Hirth F 33 and a three blade Power Fin prop.
"This combination flies the Gull 2000 quite well, with
very little vibration." Mark has about 35 hours on the engine, belt drive, and
prop combination and indicates the unit performs very similar to the Rotax 277,
"but a lot smoother, with phenomenal fuel economy, the Gull 2000 can fly
along at cruise with as little as 3800 rpm."
