Recreational Power the North American distributor for
the Hirth line of aircraft engines was at the show a prototype of their newest
engine, which will be available in the spring of next year. According to Matt
Dunbar the new three cylinder, in line, fuel injected water cooled 3701 will be
available in two models a high torque low rpm model of 80 horsepower developing
its power at 4200 rpm and a high performance version of 120 hp at 6200 rpm.
The 3701 will use a G-50 style of reduction drive, and
be available in 5 different ratios. The exhaust system will have two basic
manifolds and styles of expansion chambers. The 3701 will have Nicosil
cylinders, with water jackets, a chromoly crankshaft, dual ignition, one digital
the other magneto style.
TBO on the high performance engine will be 1,000 hours
while the lower horsepower model will have a 1200 hour TBO. Weight complete dry
140 lbs.
"The engine has a very narrow profile making it ideal
for applications like the P51 Mustang and BD 5, arrow with narrow cowlings."
"with the liquid cooling and fuel injection, fuel burn will come in at
about the same as a four stroke engine." Five engines will be shipped out early
next year to selected outlets for testing and evaluation, and the engine will be
available to the public in May of next year.
