While certification of "Sport Plane"
aircraft has not been finalized in the U.S. many manufacturers, dealers and
distributors are banking that certification programs for "Sport Plane style
aircraft," already up and running in other countries, will allow import of those
craft into the U.S. A plane that should easily fit into the new category when it
is finalized is the CT by Flight Designs. The CT is a factory built two seat,
high wing, tricycle gear aircraft, produced using carbon fiber construction.
The kit is only available as a factory
built craft, and comes in two models the basic and deluxe. The difference being
the engine and interior packages. With the basic unit you get a cloth interior
and the Rotax 912 80 hp engine while the deluxe features a leather interior and
the 912 S 100 hp engine.
According to the factory pilot who flew the
deluxe model up from Indiana to the show, the plane cruises along nicely at 110
to 120 mph using just over 2.5 gallons of fuel per hour. Stall with flaps comes
in at 38 mph. Climb rate depending on load ranges from 1,000 to 1,400 feet per
minute. Some of the standard features include adjustable seats, elevator
trim, four point seat belts, two baggage compartments, a 48 inch wide cabin,
electric flaps with 52 degrees of movement, disc brakes, electric start, and
steerable nose wheel.
All aircraft are test flown in
Germany before shipped to the U.S.
Also on display at the Rollison
Airplane Company
booth was a new product from Solar Wings called the Booster. The
booster is a hang
glider power unit designed to provide foot-launched hang gliding from flat
land, with a strong climb rate, good glide performance and the low noise
level.
Retractable jockey wheels protect the propeller from damage. Once
airborne the engine can be shut off, at which time the prop folds away.
