The Bellaire SE - It took Richard Berstling 13.5 hours
to travel from Sebring Florida to Oshkosh Wisconsin in his beautifully finished
Bellaire SE. The Bellaire SE is a plans built craft first introduced at
Sun N Fun in 1997. The plane Richard flew in with is his original aircraft which
currently has just over 220 hours on it.
It is powered by a 503 DCDI, twin carb Rotax engine,
using a 2.58 to 1 reduction drive. With this combination the Bellaire cruises
along at between 85 and 90 mph. When the B box is changed to a C drive with a 3
to 1 ratio cruise increases to 105 mph.
Climb rate is over 1000 feet per minute with stall
coming in at 37 mph. Standard stick and rudder controls are used with a center
stick and left throttle. When built from plans the plane will take about 2,000
hours to complete, component parts are also offered to cut down on building
times. The plans consist of 24 pages of 24" x 26" cad drawings.
According to Richard the plane will shortly be available
in a two place configuration, both side by side and tandem. Currently
three, two place craft are under construction with completion expected in
about six months time. These will be powered by the Rotax 912 series of engines
as well as the 75 hp "Walter Morrow" "while older technology - it works."
